The self-portraits in the Model Minority series subvert the conventions and expectations of Asian masculinity and put the “invisible minority” in the bright lights of the paparazzi by concretizing the meaning of the word “model” in “model minority.” The characters created in these self-portraits present the model minority as a neutered and passive state in between gender constructs. The formal aspects of these self-portraits are informed by classic fashion photography of female models by male photographers such as Horst, Beaton, Avedon, Penn, Sieff, and Newton. These photographs collapse the traditional male gaze and the female subject of classic fashion photography into a single act of self-portraiture.
