Mrs. Spring Fragrance / 2017

In this series of photographs, I imagined and created the persona of the titular character, Mrs. Spring Fragrance, in the short story, Mrs. Spring Fragrance, by Sui Sin Far (pen name of Chinese-British-Canadian-American writer Edith Maude Eaton). The short story was originally published in 1912 as part of a collection of short stories written by Eaton in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In this series, I wanted to explore and examine the issues of race, class, and immigration of Chinese Americans touched upon in this short story, exemplified by the very brief reference to Mrs. Spring Fragrance's making of American "fudge" in the story.
